The Breaking of a Band...Literally...
Well, we we're thinking we'd just have CD Release/Final Show info. for you down this home stretch, but...things happen.Now we have to preface this with the fact that we've never said our band is "breaking up." Ceasing to exist, indefinite hiatus, sure...but never breaking up. Well, our band is breaking up literally now because of sports injuries. Paul is on the mend after breaking his finger playing football and Ryan just got done having surgery on his ankle after he broke that playing softball. So it's safe to say that July 10th can't come soon enough, simply because Connealy and I would like to not break any of the equally important bones in our body. Bet you didn't think the last Scholars show would involve Ryan sitting on a stool, did you?
And now for the tidbit of CD info. that you've all been waiting for...the track listing!

The Final Countdown...
Will we cover the greatest hit Europe ever had at the last Scholars show? I guess you'll just have to find out for yourself on July 10th, won't you?So with that said, things for the final show are in motion. The disc was recently sent off to the "press" for "replication" with all "ten songs" "completed." And yes, those are "fake" "air quotes."
The plan within the next couple weeks is to release more info. about the disc as it becomes available...or as I see fit...as well as get some of the new tunes up on MySpace. That said, the first song on the CD we're releasing for mass consumption is "Cheap Shot." We hope you enjoy it and keep checking the website for the final onslaught of Ten O'Clock Scholars info. about the last show, life in general, and the final album from yours truly, titled "Ten To Close."

Line-up Announced!
If you're interested in musical fusion, then July 10th is going to be right up your alley. Kinda, sorta. To be honest, I'm not even sure what musical fusion is...musical fission, well, lets just say I'm more familiar with that.Which takes me to my next point...we're pleased to be joined by Third Frate, Fork In The Road, and The Pilots for our final show! Because we've got such a packed line-up, the show starts at 8:30pm. But if you feel like creating a line outside the building at 6:15pm, we won't complain.

CD Release Party And Other Big News
July 10th, 2009...a day that will live in infamy. Not only is this the date of our CD Release Party for the new album that has been three years in the making, it is also the date of the final Ten O'Clock Scholars show. I know...I know...I'll give it some time to soak in. This means no more ridiculous e-mails, no more facebook and myspace invites for shows on Wednesdays, or Thursdays...or Sundays, no more new song debuts that are only half done and 1 minute long, no more watching us "practice" on stage, no more awkward silence between songs followed by an awkward Connealy story. Ten O'Clock Scholars will be on an indefinite hiatus after the show on July 10th. And you wanna know why?...because we hate each other. Yep...just tons of hatred flowing in all directions...hatred that you thought only elephants could have towards one another. Well, we've got elephant hatred and there's no turning back...What? I couldn't just write the sappy stuff that every band does right off the bat. That's not very Ten O'Clock Scholars-y...
The truth of the matter is, it just feels like it's time. We've been playing together for 9 years, which is one hell of a long time. And with a run that long, over the course of time musical tastes change, styles begin to differ, etc. And as of late it's been getting harder to book gigs, schedule practices, write songs, even harder to make fun of Connealy...and when that happens, well, you can kind of see the writing on the wall. Now please, don't get the idea that we're calling it quits because times are tough. Quite the contrary. We just want to go out on a high note. Like Seinfeld. Put it this way...think of that note in the chorus of "Satisfied" that Ryan sings...well we want to go higher than that. And what better way to say thank you to all of you guys for the years of support than to give you one last CD and then ride off into the sunset on three white stallions and a pack mule loaded with all the gear...and Connealy.
Honestly, we can't thank you all enough for being part of the Ten O'Clock Scholars, because without you guys, really none of this would have been possible. We've played gigs all over the Midwest, had our songs on the radio, played music festivals, won band battles, been on TV, opened for world famous musicians, jammed with Grammy Award winners, had breakfast with Tiffany, and made some great friends along the way.
As more information about the CD and CD release party becomes available, we'll be sure to get it up on the website. Right now, we hope that you'll mark your calendar for July 10th, and come out to The Slowdown to help us have one hell of a final show. Again, big props to all you listeners, friends, fans, and casual acquaintances out there. It truly has been a great experience being in this band for the last 9 years and we hope you've at least moderately enjoyed the music we created...or at least won't tell us otherwise.

So It's The New Year
Here we are. 2009. Only a really good number if you're counting the number of licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop. Not really good for much else.And now the news:
First off, we've got a couple shows coming up at the end of January. Be sure to head over to the shows page and check them out as we'll be playing with some great bands in both Omaha and Lincoln.
Secondly, we're still working towards the next album, and have just about 8 songs recorded for the new disc. We've been working on a few new tunes as well, so these next shows will probably be the debut of a handful of new tracks...some of which have already been recorded.
And lastly, if you're looking for something to do between now and our shows at the end of January, you should check out the internet show "Going Nowhere," a character-driven comedy on Channel 6's Omaha Buzz website that stars non other than Paul and Taylor. There are 12 webisodes that should get you up to speed for the launch of the second season that starts on January 28th. (See...we're not just musicians...we're artists.) Hope you enjoy it!

Recording Update
The recording session at Bassline Studio was productive, to say the least. We laid down three songs, including a brand new song we tentatively called "Early" for some reason or another, that we've never played live. In fact it's so new that while Ryan was recording vocals to another song, Justin and I had to go finish up the lyrics in another room. Even though that was mildly successful, we we're still missing half of a third verse and a bridge. We finished it, but Paul likened it to writing an essay the day before it's due. Not the Scholars...we wait until 10 minutes before we have to turn it in.And if you're looking for something to do this weekend, head down to Kurt & Clyde's (just a half block north of Sokol Auditorium) on Saturday, Nov. 29th. Paul and I will be joined by Nate Hall of Third Frate for a show as our indie-rock, anti-establishment band Death of a Taxpayer. We're opening up for The Brothers (Matt and Mike Geiler) at 9pm, so it's sure to be an interesting night of music.

Ten O'Clock Scholars...Now With News!
Just a few quick things in the Scholars world to alert you about...which as always will turn into something that takes you 5 minutes to sift through.This weekend we head into the studio to record new tracks for an upcoming album that has been in the works for a good 2 years now. We're laying down a couple songs we've been playing live for the past few months. And we only told you this so you don't think we're not trying to provide you with a new album...we try, it just takes us awhile to do things.
And lastly, using the Scholars website to pub something else of sorts, on Saturday, Nov. 29th, Ten O'Clock Scholars will not be playing a show. However, Paul and Taylor, combining forces with our good friend Nate Hall from Third Frate, will be playing under the name Death of a Taxpayer at Kurt & Clydes in Omaha. The Brothers (Matt and Mike Geiler) graciously asked the Scholars to join them for a night of musical fusion and when we couldn't, they took the next best thing...a side project consisting of half the Scholars and a third of Third Frate. Kurt & Clyde's is relatively new to the music scene, located just a half block north of Sokol Auditorium. Should be a great night of music for those 21+ and willing to part with $4. We'll be playing many of the songs from the two-man band mini-tour, and probably "Cry, Cry, Cry" from the Onken-Stein Records compilation disc.

Damn The Power!
So we had a practice this weekend...well sort of...we tried to practice. Check that, we actually did practice 2 1/2 songs until we lost power. I figured it was probably just too much rock for the basement outlets to handle. But, after looking at the breakers, I discovered that it was not the copius amounts of wattage, but the gigantic wind advisory that we were under. So, for the first practice we've had in months with all four members present at the same time, we practiced playing darts for an hour whilst waiting for the power to return. It did not return. Slightly unfortunate because we had planned to work on at least 3 new songs, some of which we were going to play Thursday for the Halloween show. Alas, the rock gods would not have it, so we're doomed to play songs you know and love...and maybe a couple covers we haven't played in awhile.We do have a studio update to mention as well. Towards the end of November we'll be heading to Bassline Studios, where we recorded "Please Baby Please," to lay down a few more songs for the upcoming album. As of now, the plan is to record "Me and My Girl," "Can't Quit," and one other TBD.

All Hollows Eve...Eve
Halloween's on Oct. 30th, right? No...well screw that, it should be. And to prove that it should be we're playing our annual Halloween Bash on Oct. 30th, if for no other reason than to prove a point to Happy Jack the Grave Dancer. You can't trust a thing that guy says.Here's the lowdown:
Knickerbockers - Oct. 30th
w/ Third Frate and Labeled
Doors at 8pm, Show at 9pm
$5, but only $4 if you dress up in costume
18+
Labeled kicks off the show, followed by Third Frate and then us. Should be an excellent night of music and an even better night of costume shinnanigans. And, to top it all off, we've convinced Knickerbockers to sell alcoholic beverages that night. That's right...alcohol. Oh what a night!
