Review:
Nothing like attempting to play all of you songs for the crowd without one member of the band. Paul, well, he got sick that day at work and went home and didn't think he could make it through the set. So, for the first time ever, the Ten O'Clock Scholars played as three piece...well, this wasn't the first time ever we'd played as a three piece, just the first time ever without Paul. And, it was a little weird. Ryan had to double bag it...there's got to be a better way to say that...and there were some noticable solos missing (see Don't and Take Me Back), but it wasn't for lack of trying. We even tried to get Jeremy Francis to sit in for this show and play some lead guitar for us, but those Third Frate guys are so unreliable. Then again, our band appears to be unreliable...but hey, don't blame Paul, not everyone is man enough to play a show with Mono. (Though I wouldn't suggest it because I had to go to the emergency room and get an I-V the next day...still, that's pretty badass...you have to admit.)
In all honesty, I blame the whole thing on Chris Kuhl. For as long as I can remember he's been trying to sabotage the band because we wouldn't let him in it and he just happened to be in town from Germany to catch the show. He won't be stateside for another 2 years though, so take that as you will.

Well, it was a very quick, half hour set because it was Vago's CD Release party for "Over Moons and Heavy Arms," and they deserved more time to rock. By the time we went on the place was pretty crowded, but the crowd hung by the tables and bar so there wasn't really anyone up and about...which is fine, don't get me wrong...I mean there were at least asses in the seats, but it seemed to us that we were more annoying people than anything else. Inbetween songs there was more awkward silence than applause, but that's ok...you can't win them all, but damn if we don't try!
In other news, Connealy sounded good playing through someone else's rig...damn good.

Review:
This was our first time out at the Rox and probably its best quality is its proximity to Taco Bell. Basically you can walk across the parking lot and get there. How bomb-diggity is that? Not very because using the phrase bomb-diggity negates anything cool I previously said.
The show was fun. We played well and the light show was something out of a rave. We sold a couple CD's but no glo-sticks...which is too bad because it cost us way more money for the bag of 16,000 glo-sticks than it did for us to make the CD...oh well, maybe next time.

Review:
Well, there's nothing better than hopping in the van with the band and heading off to play an out of town gig. Of course Webster City is no College Station and we ended up bringing the diehard fans with us in the van and made Ryan drive by himself...that's what happens when you miss a band practice.
Actually, we had to do some musical driving chairs because of reason's that don't concern anyone other than Mr. T. Nevertheless, Ryan got to Webster City before us and then frantically called Connealy after he went into the local pub to get a tasty beverage, then was subsequently stared at by the locals and ushered out with a shotgun. Ok, so I made up the part about the shotgun, but we did find Ryan alive after we helped the sound guy load up his gear.
One of the best things about this show was the distance we were able to park from the stage to unload our gear. Our van and trailer was a mere 4 feet from the flatbed trailer that we played on...making for a very nice unload. Once we got all set up and started to soundcheck, some gentlemen from the park across the street came over and asked me if we could stop playing and wait until this Christian band was done playing and the awards were given out for best Webster City Citizen, or whatever they were giving out awards for, because no one could hear over at this park that was a half a block away.
So we stopped and ate their free food. Then we went into the Saloon that we played in front of, ate some more food, drank a bit, and then went on an adventure. Well, I'm not sure about anyone else, but Paul and I went on an adventure...why...because there bathroom at the Saloon was a one seater with no door and we didn't want to stand guard for eachother. Thinking that there has to be some place in Webster City to get a little privacy, we headed down main street to see what we could find. The video rental store had no bathroom, so then we went to the Dollar Genereal, figuring that buying something for a dollar would be worth the price of privacy. Well we walked in there and the lady behind the counter said they were closing in 5 minutes, so we walked to the back of the store, found no bathroom, and walked back out. Now we contemplated going to Subway, but neither of us was hungry at this point and the Subway looked like it could hold about 2 people in the dining area, so we assumed the worst. So...this led us back to the Christian rock party across the street. We headed toward a building that we thought might be public restrooms, but it turns out it was just an empty brown barn in the middle of this park; however, once at the park we were able to spot the johns...right behind where the Christian rock band was playing. And, being the rockstars we are, we went right passed the band, scoffed at them, and then flipped a coin to see who got to go in first. Classy, I know, but this was the weirdest bathroom ever. I locked the door when I went in because even though it was a multiple person bathroom, the door on the stall was literally 6 inches from the john so there was really no way to shut it. I told Paul of this anomoly and he said, "Oh, is that a challenge?" I said, "You're damn right it is." So Paul entered the restroom, didn't lock the door, and came out explaining that he had to hold the top of the stall door and basically do a permanent calf raise to keep from falling and keep the door shut.
The show really pales in comparison to that story. There were about 80 or so people milling about the beer garden, but they didn't stray far from the beer table, which was a good 300 feet away from the stage. Some people danced, some people really enjoyed the show, some kids got some drumsticks, most people got drunk, and we played pretty damn good. Good enough to quake the pillars of heaven...or shake the flatbed trailer we were playing on enough to worry about things falling off.

Review:
It was a night of new music all around. Whipkey busted out some new tunes that don't even have names yet, Sarah Benck and the Robbers were playing a lot of tunes off their new disc that comes out in two weeks, and we debuted two new originals and one new cover song. (Matt Banta's "American"...which Ryan taped, with permission, on a hand held recorder in 1999 and then taught to us.) But, the "KXVO Song" might never be played live again because Geiler and VanRoy were in attendance...so hopefully the people that showed up felt like they got their money's worth, and even if they just watched Geiler dance instead of the bands, that was probably worth the price of admission there...I just remember Geiler "dancing" by pretending to throw a baseball in slow motion and then at one point wall dancing at the back of the club by the pinball machine to "Take Me Back."
